Why is self-confidence important?
Self-confidence, sometimes referred to as self-esteem, is your belief that you are valuable as an individual and that you have the right and ability to succeed in life. When you have an appropriate amount of self-confidence, you feel positive about yourself and generally enjoy positive experiences in regard to achievement and personal relationships.
However, if you suffer from a lack of self-confidence, it can lead to a poor self-image, low achievement, difficulties in social interactions and relationships, and mental health issues. People who suffer from low self-esteem have an increased risk for conditions such as:
-Depression
-Anxiety
-Eating disorders
-Substance abuse
Self-harming behaviors, such as cutting or excessive risk-taking, are also associated with a lack of self-confidence.
What causes a lack of self-confidence?
Poor self-confidence develops as a result of negative “self-talk.” When you repeat self-critical thoughts to yourself, you may come to believe those ideas are accurate. Some examples of negative self-talk are:
-“I’m not smart enough to do well at school or work”
-“There’s nothing about me that anyone should like”
-“I don’t deserve to be happy”
-“I’m not good at anything”
Negative self-talk can arise from childhood experiences like bullying or harsh adult criticism. Discouraging adult experiences can also affect your self-esteem and confidence.
Negative beliefs about yourself tend to expand to include negative feelings about the world and other people, which in turn can contribute to depression and other mental health conditions.
